Principles of Food Production classes

15 May

It’s amazing how much money is wasted on food – it spoils before you can use it, or you just have too much in the garden and are not sure what to do with it. There are some great classes coming up to learn all kinds of ways to preserve your food.

There are 4 classes in the series, it’s $50 for the full 4 plus a lab fee that’s different for each one, depending what you do. That will easily pay for itself the first year with all your new skills – which will then last a lifetime. Seems most of us (including myself) have forgotten how to can food, blanch it etc.  This would make a great gift, or a fun outing as a group of friends.

The 4 classes are Food Preparation and Preservation, Introduction to Home Preservation, Blanching and Freezing Produce and Get Canning!  Great timing too, you can plant a bit more in the garden to last all winter – if you don’t have a garden there are a lot of community garden programs and fruit share programs etc. around the city. I’ve even seen people just put up a cardboard sign for free apples if you pick them.

The classes are at the Good Neighbours Active Living Centre at 720 Henderson Hwy. Runs June 3, 10 and 17, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
and June 24, 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

You can find out more on their website – or call the Good Neighbours Active Living Centre at 669-1710 to register.
