Winnipeg Food Share Coop – Good food box

18 Jan

If you’re looking to eat healthier, cheaper and want a different option to do so, check out Winnipeg Food Share Coop.

They offer a bunch of different good food boxes – from $8 to $20 depending on the size, which to me is super cheap!

There are depots across the city – and it’s about every 2 weeks, the next deliveries being Jan. 23rd and Feb. 6th. You can see samples of what is included in the box here – for example, a $20 box in sept. included:

good food

6 large Navel oranges
1 lemon
1 garlic
1 piece ginger
2 pounds bananas
1 cantaloupe
6 apples (BC)
1 head celery
2 cucumbers (local)
2 green peppers
1 head broccoli (local)
1 head romaine lettuce
3 pounds cooking onions (local)
2 pounds carrots (local)
4 pounds red potatoes (local)
3 pounds beets (local)
1 large acorn squash (local)

Neat variety, a lot of food for the value – and can see coming up with all kinds of great dishes and snacks with these. I like how there’s a little bit of everything included. Check out their site and see if there’s a depot nearby. Does anyone use their service already?

  1. I’ve been getting the Good Food Box for a few months now and it is fantastic. I get the family size and I’ve always been impressed with the produce. It’s never anything strange, just things I would normally get…garlic, lemon, cauliflower, apples, bananas etc. Sometimes there are things that I wouldn’t buy (beets, but it turns out my kids love them :S ) So it’s been great and it makes grocery shopping a little easier knowing that I’m going to have a box of produce ready for me in the middle of the week. I would definitely recommend it. They also give recipes for the ingredients. The produce is local as much as it can be, and you can tell the difference from the grocery store produce.

    • It sounds good – I think I’m going to have to try it out! Always nice to hear from someone who uses it too – the variety is neat for sure!

  2. I am having problems accessing the website. Can you opt in for once a month, or does it have to be every two weeks? I think this is a fabulous idea. Are the pick up times/locations convenient? I am very interested in this, but I would hate to have to drive across the city to pick up.

    • most of the pickups are in one area….there’s only one for st.vital/st.b and anything else close to that. Probably if there’s more interest in other areas they’d work on adding them…maybe contact them if it’s too far.

    • I pick mine up in the West End and you can choose to get it once a month if you want. Just talk to whoever is coordinating the pickups for your area
If there aren’t pickups in your area, maybe talk to your community association, or community centre or church, I would assume all you need is interest and an available depot and coordinator

  3. We’d lime to join the food co-op. Unfortunately, there is no phone number or location. When we click on the link it takes us nowhere.
How do we get on this program?
