Scanner Price Accuracy Voluntary Code – or SCOP….what you need to know

SCOP is one of those programs that seems to cause a lot of confusion. It’s good to read up on it and know which stores will honor it, and how to go about claiming it.

It’s a voluntary program that shows the store wants prices to scan up properly – if not there’s a reward for the customer that catches the mistake.

Here’s the scenario…you’re at a store that participates in the program. You can find a list of them here, and usually there are signs when you walk in and at the checkout stating they participate. Let’s say the 1st item that you bought was supposed to be $7.55 but it rings up for $8.50….since the item is under $10 you get the item free if you catch it and ask them to SCOP it.

If the item was over $10 and you catch it ringing up incorrectly, you will then get $10 off the total price of the item.

Simply tell the cashier the price was wrong, they will most likely send someone to check it and remove the amount or the $10 off your total. If you were buying multiples of the same item, you will only get the SCOP on the 1st item, and the rest at the price they should have been.

There are a lot of stores whose items constantly ring up wrong….it’s worth really keeping an eye on the prices. One of the best money saving tips is to really watch at the register, it’s amazing how many mistakes you will catch apart from SCOP. And if you’re rushed at the cashier just check it before you leave the store at least, just in case.

It’s also good for those who don’t want to keep an eye out or don’t know about the program…once a store pays you for the SCOP you’d assume they will then fix the price on the scanner. Works out for everyone.

  1. If it’s not in the flyer Walmart just takes the price tag off the shelf, they don’t change the computer. That’s why you see some items with no price and no way for you to claim SCOP.

  2. Can you only claim SCOP on the day you purchased the item? Last week Superstore wouldn’t let me use SCOP on an item that I had purchased the day before. I think it might have had more to do with their prices/flyer changing over from a Thursday to a Friday?

    • I think it’s only at the time of checking out…but you can call the toll free # and find out for sure. Worth it if it happens often at the same store

  3. I was just told at Superstore that scop didn’t apply to salads and weighted items. I called the toll free number but no one got back to me.

  4. I was at walmart today and under my bacon it said 2 for $8. At the till they came up as 5.97. I mentioned scop and she told me it doesnt apply to the deals. Just if the price comes up higher…i told her it did come up higher. They cost me more than 4 dollars each. Does it not apply to the “2 for _” posted under prices?
