Save Money While on Holidays!

If you’re planning a trip, whether by car or plane there are a lot of ways to save!

  • First of all, airmiles! You can use them to book plane tickets, hotels, activities – even redeem them on a roadtrip for gas or groceries! Check them out and see what you could use them for, then plan some shops accordingly. If you plan early and do a lot of spend $100 get 100 airmiles shops, or shop when they have Blue Friday airmiles deals at Safeway and Sobeys they can add up quickly. Get their credit card with airmiles for certain bank accounts for even more miles!
  • Check out deal sites and coupon books for the area you’re heading to.  You might be able to save a lot on outings that way – even hitting up a Costco if you’re spending some time there and look at the discounted gift cards for outings and restaurants.
  • Pack well – by not forgetting things and thinking of what you (or spouse or kids) will need, you’ll save a lot by not picking up extras. Even just bringing along favourite snacks is a good idea. If you’re planning a roadtrip, then pack a lot of food to save during the entire trip – even investing in a good cooler will pay off as you can replenish it as you go.
  • If you’re on a roadtrip, pay attention to gas prices. Download the gas apps for the area, and remember that gas usually goes up on weekends, especially long weekends. You can even just get gas from Costco along the way, or other gas stations with rewards. Make sure to get CAA or something similar for any trouble along the way – but also for free maps etc.
  • Join rewards programs – for the hotel, gas stations, anything you think you will use on the trip. It’s a great idea to have a seperate email just for things like this. Sign up for a lot of them – even things like newsletters etc for stores and outings will send you discounts via email often.
  • Ask people for advice – before you go ask friends or family who have been there. Or go online and ask on facebook or twitter. And once you’re there, ask locals. They can tell you the best spots for food or things to see or do that locals do, which is the best way to see a new area.
  • Don’t be shy about asking for upgrades or deals – whether for rentals, hotels, discounts – it doesn’t hurt to ask and can end up saving quite a bit.
