IMG_20151017_194304 If you’re looking for something fun to do for a Halloween outing – make sure to check out A Bite and a Fright at Lower Fort Garry!

This was the perfect evening out – a great dinner followed by some big scares! The doors open at 7pm so don’t get there too early as you’ll be waiting in your car.

The restaurant is beautiful and overlooks the beginning of the activities. Provisions Market and Café is serving a 3 course dinner for $28 plus tax and tip – great deal for everything you get.

For your appetizer you get the choice of Walleye Croquettes or a Squashed Pumpkin Guts soup. I had the soup – it’s presented so well that it gets the theme going! There’s a spider web with bugs on it….ok, so it’s puffed wild rice but it really looks like it! This was super yummy and amazingly filling. Good to warm you up and keep you going for the events of the night.

Melanie who came with me tried out the Walleye croquettes since I don’t eat fish – apparently they were really good as  they disappeared off the plate pretty quickly! These are served with shaved dried tuna and tartar sauce.

They have a really good selection of drinks too – had some nice red wine and they even have pic a pop which is always fun!

I like meals where you choose from either this or that – makes life easy and all the choices were good so it’s fun to get to try and share too.

For the entrée you could either have Meat Stew or Turkey Leg.

I had to have that confit turkey leg. It was super delicious and came with apple dumplings and cranberry sauce and looked pretty spooky too!  The turkey was amazing!! It went perfectly with the sides and had a nice skin but was moist inside. I could eat this every day it was so good!!!

It was a stew, that came with a chicken leg and ribs!! Genius!! Now that is a hearty dish! And the sauce on those ribs!!! Another thing I could eat every day!

They really focus on local ingredients and it really comes through in the taste and presentation. When you think of Manitoban cuisine this meal is the perfect representation of that.

And what can you serve for a spooky dessert?

IMG_20151017_205345 A mud pie and French Toast Ice Cream with whisky of course!!! With a syringe full of raspberry coulis! And lots and lots of gummy worms and creatures. That is how you end a meal – it was fun but super yummy.

All in all this was an amazing meal – the food was great, the location is fun and I love the local flare to everything.

And when you’re done dinner you can either sit back and keep watching people run by the windows or decide to go join in to the Fright at the Fort event.

Which, of course we did! This was the perfect level of scare for us – not too much, just enough.

You wander around the Fort and follow lit paths and then enter some pretty haunted buildings. It was a lot of fun, not gory or gross for those who aren’t into that. Just lots of spooky stuff, creepy old buildings and people jumping out at you. I honestly can’t remember the last time I laughed so much – we had so much fun and I really recommend it for almost any age group – not small kids of course! But we did see some senior couples there and I thought that was pretty cool!

Fright at the Fort lasts until 11pm, so you have plenty of time to eat and then go for a scare. It’s pretty much the perfect evening – usually you are stuck with blah food at events like this. I love that you get to have a great meal before, something you’ll really enjoy and it really sets the mood for the evening. They’re open for other events too, I think we will go back for lunch during the family friendly ones too. Keep an eye on this Café, there will be a lot to come from them and if you’re planning any special events make sure to look at everything they offer.

And one lucky person will be winning a dinner for two at A Bite and a Fright at the Provisions Café!! You can go any evening they’re open for this, so either Oct. 23rd, 24th or 30th. Here are your ways to enter:

  2. I’m most interested in trying the Squashed Pumpkin Guts Soup! Hilarious name for a recipe. I’m a pumpkin lover and would so enjoy this. I just know it!

  3. Liked provisions on Facebook. My husband and I had them cook for us on our Anniversary which was served to us in a smaller private dinner room in the big house at the fort. Was delicious! Would love to win.
